A SAPPHIRE ESCALIER BRACELET, CIRCA 1935

Designed as an articulating series of stepped fancy-links, with step-cut sapphire terminals, French import mark, probably rhodium plated, length 17.6cm

Footnotes

The vogue for 'escalier' or 'moving staircase' bracelets coincided with the return of gold during the latter half of the 1930s, when more affordable metals were being substituted for platinum and Art Deco forms were becoming more three dimensional. The articulating series of polished gold prism-shaped links set with faceted gemstones was very effective during a period of increasing austerity and reflected the architectural forms of the Art Deco era.
