London, Timothy Taylor Gallery, Craigie Aitchison, 29 March–12 May 2012
As a young boy Craigie frequently visited the Isle of Arran for holidays, providing him with a rich store of images, many of which would regularly translate to canvas in later years. They often stayed under the distinctive Goatfell mountain and in the small village of Lamlash opposite Holy Island in the Firth of Clyde and the artist described how 'we were allowed to run wild, which we were never allowed to do in Edinburgh'. Landscape with Mountain (Holy Island) draws on these fond childhood memories with the distinctive geometric background of the mountain and the changing light clinging around its edges. Following his death Craigie's ashes were scattered alongside those of both his mother and father on Arran, near Goatfell and looking over Holy Island, confirming the importance of this location to him and the strong emotional connection he felt with it.
Please note that the first line in the provenance listing for this work should be 'With Timothy Taylor Gallery', and not as stated in the printed auction catalogue.
