Michel Ghatan, Photo London Academy Publications, No. 36., 2020, pp. 34-35
Since first traveling to Tanzania in 2010, Michel Ghatan has dedicated himself to photographing East African wildlife, seeking its beauty and remoteness in stark contrast with his usual life in London. Ghatan has subsequently also explored Kenya and Botswana, tracking wildlife with the help of local Maasai, Kikuyu and Samburu warriors - often on walking safaris, the most sensitive way of meeting and photographing these magnificent, often endangered, animals. Ghatan photographs using a 35mm lens as close as two meters away from his subjects. His Gentle Giantis the last portrait of Tim, this famous "super-tusker", taken just before the animal's death.
