Footnotes

Leg Warmers is a photographic distillation of the emotion, determination, fortitude, hard work and sheer will power required to become a ballet dancer.

The work was created by Harvey Edwards, for over 45 years a celebrated dance photographer, who was inspired by his cousin Bruce Marks, a principal dancer with The American Ballet Theatre. Edwards marveled at the punishingly long hours and sheer stamina required to dance at this level and sought to capture these qualities in his images. His best-selling book The Art of Dance (with introduction by Marks), published in 1989, was a compilation of moments in the lives of these dedicated and gifted performers.

During the course of his successful career, Edwards has collaborated with a host of artistic directors Mikhail Baryshnikov, Alvin Ailey, Robert Joffrey, Merce Cunnigham and Peter Martins, while his many charitable projects have brought him into contact with Hollywood celebrities Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Cary Grant and Tony Bennett. Edwards' works hang in the Pompidou in Paris and the LA County Museum of Art, among others.

This image of Leg Warmers , hitherto only available as a poster, has been exhibited in over 200 popular television shows and movies, such as Saturday Night Live, Annie, Friends, Ellen, Will and Grace and Sex and the City, to name just a handful. The image has also featured in commercials for Hofstra University, Ernst and Young, Wang, Geico, Ray-Ban, and Dr. Pepper.

This print is unique and no others will be created. The original transparency from which it was made was destroyed by fire some time ago.

A portion of the proceeds of the sale of Leg Warmers will be donated to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
