Photographer Art Shay grew up in the Bronx and served as a navigator for the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II, flying more than 50 bomber missions before joining the staff of LIFE magazine as a writer. He soon moved to Chicago to work as a freelance photographer for LIFE, Time, Sports Illustrated and many other national publications. A prolific writer - producing stories and columns for a host of magazines and newspapers, plays and even children's books, more than 80 publications in total. His photographs can be found in the permanent collections of many institutions, including The Art Institute of Chicago.
