Ronald Cobb (British, 1907-1977): Two original costume designs for Murray's Cabaret Club showgirls in Spanish-style dresses,

1950's,
the hand-painted pencil, watercolour and gouache costume designs featuring a showgirl in a sheer yellow and red Spanish-style dress annotated Rag Time Medley by the artist, also bearing a part signature Ronald; together with another featuring a showgirl in a purple striped dress of similar style, with pencil annotation South American No. by the artist, unsigned, both mounted, framed and glazed, first design: 7 3/4in x 15in (19.5cm x 38cm); second: 9/12in x 17in (24cm x 43cm) (2)

Footnotes

Ronald Cobb's costumes celebrated the Latin craze that was rife through London's dance clubs of the 50's, and played out through the sambas of Carmen Miranda and mambos of Perez Prado. The Latin numbers became so popular that they became a staple at the nightclub.
