喇嘛銅像
西藏 十三/十四世紀
The master's stoic concentration has been vividly captured by a skilled artist. Contrasting the large meditation cloak loosely draped around his shoulders are the tightly wrapped monastic shirt and inner robe hugging the contours of his torso. Drawing a likeness to Buddha images of Shakyamuni's defeat over Mara at Bodhgaya, the lama is portrayed—himself a Buddha—seated above a throne marked by a chakra and two vajras, and his right hand in the 'earth-touching' gesture. The three-tiered base is characteristic of bronzes created during the 13th & 14th centuries, reflected in a portrait bronze of Phagmodrupa (1110-1170) published in Rossi & Rossi, Homage to the Holy, London, 2003, no.14, and another portrait of a lama in the Rubin Museum (HAR 65458).
