Provenance:
The Royal collections of Saxony, Japanese Palace, Dresden, delivered in December 1724
The form is based on Chinese examples from the collection of Augustus the Strong. In December 1724, 36 "kleine Bouteillen von kleinen Aufsäzgen 3 Z. hoch und 2. Z. in diam" were delivered to the King and listed in the inventory under no. 94 (quoted by J. Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, II (2013), p. 263). The 1770 inventory of the Japanese Palace lists only a garniture of five various pieces, mostly damaged, under no. 94, suggesting that the vases may by then have been kept elsewhere, perhaps in the Hofconditorei.
Two miniature vases of this type with Japanese Palace inventory number 94 - possibly the present lot - were sold from the royal collections of Saxony in Dresden by Rudolph Lepke's Kunst-Auctions-Haus, 7-8 October 1919, lots 234-235; another is illustrated by C. Boltz, Die wöchentlichen Berichte über die Tätigkeit der Meissner Dreher und Former vom 6. Juni 1722 bis 31. Dezember 1728, in Keramos 178 (2002), p. 19, ill. 4.
