A Meissen octagonal dish, circa 1737

Decorated in Kakiemon style with the Shiba Onko pattern and a foliate and floral border around the brown-edged rim, 23.7cm across, crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue, incised X inside footrim, incised Japanese Palace inventory number N=211-/ W

The Royal collections of Saxony, Japanese Palace, Dresden (delivered in June 1737)

Six dishes of this size decorated with the Shiba Onko pattern (including the present lot) - along with others of different sizes - are included in a list of porcelain delivered to the Japanese Palace dated 25 June 1737 (published by C. Boltz, Japanische Palais-Inventar 1770 und Turmzimmer-Inventar 1769, in Keramos 153 (1996), p. 97. All six dishes were still there in 1770, when they are recorded in the inventory of the Japanese Palace (Boltz, p. 80).
