Two Du Paquier double-handled beakers and trembleuse stands from a service made for Cardinal Abati Olivieri, circa 1735

Each side decorated with the arms of the Cardinal, black foliate scrollwork above the handles embellished in gilding, the shaped stands similarly decorated, the arms alternating with shells surrounded by foliate scrollwork above trellis panels in black heightened in gilding, the centres applied with a scrolling pierced gallery, the rims gilt, the undersides decorated with polychrome panels of shell motifs, trelliswork and flowerheads, the beakers: 8.8cm high; the stands: 20.5cm long (4)

Cardinal Fabio degli Abbati Olivieri (1658-1738) was born in Pesaro and served in 1690 as an aide to his cousin, Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Albani, later Pope Clemnent XI (1700-21), who made him a cardinal in 1715. Two other trembleuse cups and stands and a waste bowl from the same service are in the Frick Collection, New York (Gift from the Melinda and Paul Sullivan Collection), published in M. Chilton/C. Lehner-Jobst, Fired by Passion (2009), cat. no. 96.
