A Maiolica Istoriato dish, Urbino, possibly the workshop of Guido Durantino (Guido Fontana), circa 1540

Decorated with a scene of a man on horseback, dressed in a suit of armour and with a plume on his helmet, his white horse galloping towards a man running from them, a small black porcupine with a blue band around its waist to his side, all within a naturalistic woodland setting, 23cm diam, paper label to the reverse (minimal typical losses to the glaze on the edge of the rim)

Guido Durantino, originally from Castel Durante, was known to have run one of the largest maiolica workshops in Urbino employing many of the best painters in the city, especially for istoriato painting. For further details and further pieces attributed to the workshop, see T. Wilson, Maiolica, Italian Renaissance Ceramics in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2016), nos. 63, 67 and 68.
Another piece from the workshop was sold in these rooms, 6 December 2018, lot 1, and is now in the collection of the University of Georgia.
