A rare pair of Fulda figures of a man and woman feeding animals, circa 1770-75

Modelled by Georg Ludwig Bartholomae, the woman feeding chickens, wearing a grey-chequered bodice and striped skirt with puce floral hem, holding grain gathered in her green apron, the man standing by a dog kennel with a dog eating from a bowl and a cat watching, his left hand raised, wearing a puce-striped jacket reserved with flowers and green, patterned breeches, the base applied with leaves, 16.5cm and 15.3cm high, cross marks in underglaze-blue, black-painted inventory numbers H-K2, applied paper collectors' labels inscribed in ink 'No. 6.' (twice) and '321' and '322' (two tiny chips to ribbons on lady's shoulder and neck) (2)

These figures are mentioned in a factory inventory of 1 July 1775: 'Figuren so Hund und Hüner füttern' [figures feeding a dog and chickens] as well as in a price-list of 1786 quoted by Fritzsche/Stasch, p.67; see also nos. 31 and 32 for similar figures in the Vonderau-Museum, Fulda, and a list of further recorded examples.
