A rare Meissen double-handled oval basket, circa 1736

Probably modelled by J.J. Kaendler, with a basketwork exterior applied with two handles with a gilt flower, each with a male and female terminal emblematic of the Seasons and embellished in enamel colours, the interior base painted with bamboo flanked by flowers, the sides with sprigs of indianische Blumen and insects below a geometric and foliate border, 25.5cm across handles, crossed swords mark in blue (minor chips)

This large basket model may be the one referred to by Kaendler is his work notes for September 1736: 'Ein Körpgen Von ziemlicher Größe nach einer darzu gegebenen Zeichnung in Thon geflochten und gefertiget mit Henckeln, woran die 4 Jahres zeiten durch die gewöhnlich Gesichter, welche mit Früchten verzieret sind, vorgestellt worden [A basket of large size after a supplied drawing modelled in clay and finished with handles on which the Four Seasons are represented by the usual faces decorated with fruit] (quoted by J. Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, II (2013), p. 189; for another example of the form without the masks cat. no. 161).

Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
