Footnotes

The lotus root with blossom represents the rebus for 'wishes for happiness and fruitfulness in marriage'. Small jade carvings such as the present lot were used on the scholar's desk for various purposes, as a paperweight, brushrest or purely for aesthetic enjoyment.

Compare with a related white jade 'lotus root' brushrest, Qing dynasty, from the Qing Court Collection and now in the National Museum of China (acce.no.t20181218.24663). Another Qianlong example in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, is illustrated in Jade: From Emperors to Art Deco, Paris, 2016, cat.72. See also another related example of a green jade 'lotus root and egret' brushrest, Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware (II), Shanghai, 2008, no.159.
