A rare Limehouse sauceboat, circa 1746-48

Of silver shape, the shallow oval form with a wavy rim supported by three paw feet with lion mask terminals, painted on both sides with Chinese figures in a landscape, including a fisherman by a bridge, the interior with a flowering plant below a border of shells and floral garlands, 22.5cm long

Illustrated by Nicholas Panes, British Porcelain Sauceboats (2009), p.48, figs.65 and 66. Exhibited in the ECC Exhibition 2006, no.13. Limehouse sauceboats of this shape are found in plain form and in several different moulded variations. A sauceboat with similar moulding and decoration from the Susi and Ian Sutherland Collection was sold by Bonhams on 3 October 2007, lot 98.
