A novelty Prattware Lord Rodney stirrup cup, circa 1800

The hollow handle modelled as an erect phallus, the scrotum supporting the cup formed as the head of Lord Rodney, his hair tied in a ponytail, inscribed 'LORD RODNEY' on the edge of his hat, the details picked out in ochre, yellow and brown, 28cm long

Footnotes

An example of similar form with the cup modelled as the head of Bacchus and with decoration in Portobello style was sold by Bonhams on 26 October 2005, lot 183. Stirrup cups have a long tradition associated with hunting and were usually modelled in the form of hounds, foxes or hares. The present lot is unlikely to have been made for this purpose. It was probably used as a novelty drinking vessel for bawdy drinking games in a gentlemen's club or brothel.
