Unusual Boulder Opal
Queensland, Australia
This large oval cabochon has a "porcellaneous" surface of caramel-colored hue. Whereas some boulder opals have much more porous ironstone matrixes, this stone has a greater silica content which renders it a greater hardness. Thick veins of opal in hues of green and orange run through it creating a unique pattern and a dramatic color contrast. Of suitable size for mounting as a large ring or a pendant. Weighing 42.55 carats and measuring 31.74 x 25.17 x 6.13 mm
