Very Large Phosgenite
Touissit Mine, Oujda, Morocco
Faceted by Jay Medici
The name phosgenite is derived from phosgene or carbonyl dichloride, COCI2, because the mineral contains carbon, oxygen, and chlorine. A rare mineral phosgenite is formed in the oxidation zone of lead ore deposits, especially where sea water is present. This shield-shaped stone of rich whiskey hue displays the brilliant adamantine luster for which the species is known, yet it is soft and difficult to facet, RHC4355. The stone was custom-cut by rare gemstone cutter Jay Medici of Ohio from rough that Rock provided. Weighing approximately 67.08 carats and measuring 20.36 x 18.95 x 13.46 mm
