Josephee (Joe) Sharky

Inuit, Cape Dorset/Kinngait, (1942-1979), "Loving Seals," 1978, a pair of kissing seals, carved stone, apparently unsigned.
height 17 1/2in, width 17 1/2in

Footnotes

Few works by Josephee Sharky are known; the present example and lot 21 are apparently the first to come to auction in many years. On November 12, 1979, Josephee, his father Sharky Nuna and two RCMP constables perished in a storm off Cape Dorset while returning from a camp patrol. Josephee's sons Toonoo, Napatchie and Allashuaq Sharky have carried on the sculpting traditions of their father and grandfather.

Provenance
Purchased from Inuk 1/Eskimo Art, San Francisco, CA, 1979; the handwritten bill of sale and the Canadian Certification tag accompany the lot
