According to Virginia Couse Leavitt, the artist's granddaughter, Couse first visited the Northwest in 1891 when he and his bride returned from France to live and paint for a year on his wife's family's ranch in Klikitat County, Washington. They returned to France where they spent three years at the art colony of Etaples. In 1896, they were back at the Walker Ranch where they lived for a couple of years before opening a studio in New York in the fall of 1898. This Klikitat portrait still shows the influence of this early period, rather than the darker, browner palette of his later Washington paintings circa 1900.
We wish to thank Ms. Leavitt for her kind assistance in cataloguing this lot. This painting will be included in her forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
