"Broken Pots"
Heisei era (1989-2019), early 21st century

Formed as two conjoined Iga-ware vessels with streaks of greenish ash glaze, pieces of broken pot, and other accretions
Wood tomobako storage box inscribed Yaburetsubo (Broken pots) and signed and sealed by the artist
12 1/2in (31.7cm) high, 21in (53.3cm) wide

Footnotes

Now one of the best-known of all contemporary Japanese ceramists, Tsujimura Shiro has taken inspiration from several old kilns but Iga in Mie Prefecture -an ash-glazed, high-fired stoneware first used for formal tea drinking around 1600 -is among his favorites. The title of this important mid-career sculptural work references Yaburebukuro ("Burst Bag"), an early Iga piece, designated an Important Cultural Property, with a drastically distorted form and a large gash on its front.
