Footnotes

Nakamura Takuo was born in Kanazawa, the second son of Baizan II. After pursuing a conventional business career he returned to his native city in 1978 to apprentice under his father and in 1984 spent time in Italy studying with Aldo Londi. His works are in several leading American museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. He is widely admired for his success in revitalizing the Kutani style of enamel decoration on porcelain by using it in bold, innovative ways. The present box appears to be one of his earlier works in this manner.
