Footnotes

Named a Ningen Kokuho (Living National Treasure) in 1993, Matsui Kosei played a leading role in the revival of neriage (marbleized) ceramic wares, which can trace their origins as far back as China's Tang dynasty (618-906). His success in mastering this technically challenging medium—combining a range of different colored clays in a single piece to produce a complex pattern that is visible on both sides of the body—has won him a global reputation.
