Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century
The cylindrical vessel painted in underglaze cobalt with a warrior and a female companion dressed in armor and wearing a tachi beneath a pine tree by the seashore watching as an immortal arrives standing on the back of a tortoise, the rim decorated with tasseled lappets, the cover painted with a continuation of the lappets and the tops of the pine boughs, finished with a finial formed as a reclining boy
