A two-panel screen of bodhisattvas
Momoyama (1573-1615) or Edo (1615-1868) period, early 17th century

Hanging scrolls mounted on a two panel screen, painted in ink, colors and gold on paper with the bodhisattvas Seishi and Kannon rising above a mountain range, Seishi with his hands held in prayer and Kannon carrying a lotus pedestal
35 1/2 x 19 1/2in (90.1 x 49.5cm) each, paintings only; 55 1/4 x 52 3/4in (140.3 x 134cm) overall

Footnotes

These paintings were originally part of a triptych that featured Amida Nyorai and these two principal attendant bodhisattvas, Seishi and Kannon, in an Amida Yamagoe Raigo (literally, Amida Coming over the Mountain) a devotional painting displayed at the bedside of a dying person. The arrival of the Amida trio to take the soul of the departed to the Heavenly paradise was a central tenet in Pure Land Buddhism. In such paintings, a set of strings were often attached to the hands of Amida onto which the dying believer would hold while chanting Amida Buddha's name, creating a physical and spiritual connection at the moment of departure.
