Sulphur on Aragonite
Agrigento Province, Sicily, Italy
A classic, old specimen of this native element, from a classic district, famous since the Roman era for the mining of sulphur. A large cabinet piece or for room-sized display, with an aesthetic arrangement of very large, bright yellow crystals measuring up to 2 inches scattered across the surface of the aragonite matrix. This is a mineralogically interesting piece which is also a decorative example for either the novice or serious collector. The majority of these mines closed prior to 1950 and none remain open today. Large specimens are thus rare and important, aside from their beauty. Specimen measures 8 x 7 x 3 in.
