2 volumes. 12mo (170 x 100 mm). 20 engraved plates after drawings by Mulready, including frontispieces, 3 pp of advertisements at rear of second volume. Full blue morocco by Lortic with gilt vignettes of Puck at each corner on the covers. Some scattered foxing.
Provenance: With the bookplates of Robert Hoe and Robert J. Collier on front paste-down of both volumes.

FIRST EDITION of this important work, which was the first attempt to make Shakespeare accessible to a young audience. Mary Lamb, whose name was omitted from the earliest editions, was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies. This is the first issue, with the T. Davison imprint on the verso of p 235 of Volume 1, and the earlier address of Hanway Street on the ads in Volume 2.
