A Qajar moulded pottery tile depicting Shah Abbas the Great (Reg. 1588-1629)
Persia, dated AH 1317/ AD 1899-1900

of rectangular form, moulded and decorated underglaze in polychrome with the Shah wearing a turban with ornate sarpech, inscriptions and date to his right, the border with undulating vines
25 x 20.5 cm.

Inscriptions: 'Shah 'Abbas the first', 'Accession to the throne in the year 995 of the hijrah', 'His reign 43 years', dated '1317 (1899-1900)'.

The tile is based on a portrait of Shah Abbas as depicted in a mural in the Chihil Sutun Palace, Isfahan (c. 1647) which was made famous by numerous European engravings in the early 19th Century.
