Footnotes

This painting is in the tradition (going back to the 18th Century, and continuing into the early 20th) of producing life-size, or near life-size depictions of the animals killed by the Mewari nobility, and so proclaiming their prowess on the hunting field and their royal or aristocratic status. For an example (larger at 89 x 182 cm.) dated circa 1860, see the sale in these rooms, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 8th April 2014, lot 275; for an early 20th Century painting, 21st April 2015, lot 204; and for a late 18th Century example, 2nd October 2012, lot 174.
