A Rare Cased 40-Bore Flintlock Single-Trigger Over-And-Under Travelling Pistol

With rebrowned twist octagonal barrels, the sighted top barrel signed in gold along the top flat and with gold fore-sight, breech with two gold lines, gold-lined touch-holes, border engraved tang decorated with a martial trophy and foliage, signed border engraved flat bevelled locks each decorated with a starburst behind the gold-lined semi-rainproof pan, sliding safety-catches behind each foliate engraved cock (one replaced) and also locking the steels, and rollers each bearing on a ramp on the blued steel-spring, finely chequered figured rounded butt with reblued border engraved butt-cap decorated en suite with the tang, reblued trigger-guard in the French manner, gold escutcheon with traces of owner's crest and initials, turned ramrod-pipes, and horn-tipped wooden ramrod: in lined and fitted mahogany case with accessories comprising brass-mounted powder-flask and steel bullet mould, the interior of the lid with maker's trade label, the exterior with vacant brass escutcheon, London proof marks

Durs Egg, son of Leonz Egg of Oberbuchsiten, Switzerland, was born in 1748 (d. 1831) and following a short stay in Paris, came to London and worked for John Twigg in 1772. He was granted denization in 1791 and is recognised as one of the greatest London gunmakers. He was gunmaker to George IV and the Duke of York, and was granted various patents during the course of his long and distinguished career. Examples of his work are preserved in the Royal Collection, at Windsor Castle, and many other public and private collections.
