A Rare Cased .650 (16-Bore) Tubelock Sporting Rifle And 8-Bore Wildfowling Gun
By Charles Lancaster, 151 New Bond St., London, No. 703 and 704, Circa 1830

With heavy rebrowned twist octagonal barrel signed along the top flat, leaf-sighted from 150 to 250 yards and rifled with nine spiral grooves, case-hardened recessed patent breech with rectangular platinum-lined maker's stamp, platinum line and raised platinum-lined touch-hole, the rebrowned twist sighted wildfowling barrel in three-stages, octagonal breech becoming polygonal and signed along the top flat, and patent breech en suite with the rifle barrel, border engraved tang decorated with a stag's head and scrolling foliage, signed border engraved flat detented lock decorated with scrolling foliage, hammer and tube-retainer en suite, the former with engraved safety-catch, the latter acting on an external spring with roller, figured half-stock (some old bruising) with chequered grip and dark horn fore-end cap, butt with cheek-piece, border engraved steel mounts (some rust patination) comprising butt-plate (pitting) decorated with a running stag in a landscape and foliage on the heel tang, trigger-guard with a pointer in a landscape on the bow and with pheasants in a landscape on the tang, trigger-plate with pineapple finial, vacant silver escutcheon and barrel-bolt escutcheons, adjustable set trigger, and associated brass-mounted ramrods: in original lined and fitted brass-mounted mahogany case with some accessories including Sykes patent brass-mounted powder-flask retaining much of its original lacquered finish, steel bullet and G. & J.W. Hawksley pewter oil bottle, the interior of the lid with maker's trade label (minor damage), the exterior of the lid (minor chips and old bruising) with flush-fitting brass carrying handle centred on a circular vacant brass escutcheon, London proof marks and Lancaster's barrelsmith's mark
