A Cased .650 (16-Bore) Percussion Oval-Bore D.B. Sporting Rifle
By Charles Lancaster, 151 New Bond St., London, No. 2852, Mid-19th Century

With rebrowned twist barrels with bright bores and matted rib, the latter with folding leaf back-sights (forward one removed) calibrated for 100, 150 and 200 yards, the barrels engraved beneath respectively with maker's details and 'Patent Smooth Bored Rifle', case-hardened breeches each with platinum line and pierced platinum plug, and engraved with symmetrical foliage on the flat between, case-hardened border engraved tang engraved with scrolling foliage, signed flat case-hardened detented locks and dolphin hammers decorated en suite, the former each with blued safety-catch in front, highly figured half-stock with cheek-piece, chequered grip and fore-end, reblued steel mounts comprising chequered butt-plate engraved with a wolfhound and scrolling foliage on the heel tang, trigger-guard with rutting stags in a landscape on the bow and with chequered spur, case-hardened trigger-plate with pineapple finial, rear ramrod-pipe with finial en suite, circular case-hardened patch-box cover (spring broken) decorated with a stag in a mountainous landscape within a border of foliage, silver escutcheon with later Indian inscription, original brass-mounted ramrod, and some original case-hardened finish: in original lined and fitted brass-mounted oak case (some termite damage) with full accessories mostly numbered in Indian and comprising powder-flask with suspension chain (leather damaged), two steel bullet moulds, sprue-cutter, patch-cutter, case-hardened mainspring clamp, combination tool in its leather wallet, brass powder-measure, a pair of spare burnished mainsprings, oil bottle, spare ramrod and turnscrews, the interior of the lid (minor moth damage) with maker's trade label, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle centred on a circular escutcheon with Indian inscription, the front of the case carved with later Indian inscriptions, London proof marks and Lancaster's barrelsmith's marks
