A Rare .550 Percussion J.R. Cooper's Patent Breech-Loading Sporting Rifle
By J.R. Cooper Of Birmingham, No. 100, Circa 1855

With rebrowned twist octagonal leaf-sighted barrel rifled with four grooves, rounded browned twist breech with hinged sliding chamber pivoting down against an external spring beneath the breech and slightly bevelled at the top to accommodate a hinged lever at the back, the latter shaped around the nipple and operating the chamber against an adjustable spring on the left side, the top of the chamber engraved 'J.R. Cooper's Patent Breech Loader No. 100' within scrollwork, foliate engraved tang, signed detented lock and hammer, figured half-stock with chequered grip and dark horn fore-end cap, border engraved steel mounts decorated with foliate scrollwork and comprising butt-plate, trigger-guard, and trigger-plate with pineapple shaped finial, and vacant silver escutcheon and barrel-bolt escutcheons, Birmingham proof marks
