A Fine Medieval Sword Of Oakeshott Type XVII
Mid-Late 14th Century

In excavated condition, with sharply tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section over half its length to the point and central tapering fuller over both sides of the forte, each fuller inlaid in silver 'F P F' (minor losses of silver), hilt comprising flat quillons slightly arched beneath and widening at the ends, octagonal pommel with circular central recess on each face inlaid in silver with a cross potent below two smaller crosses and within a border of small punched circles, and tapering cord-bound wooden grips wrapped in brown leather (some losses, mainly at the top)
39 cm. blade, 125.3 cm. overall
