Footnotes

Provenance
The First Decade, Albert Amor exhibition 1981, no.11
Cohen Collection, Albert Amor exhibition 1992, no.34
Simon Spero exhibition 2015, no.27
John Alchin Collection

A cup of the same shape and pattern but with a different handle is illustrated by Simon Spero, The A J Smith Collection (2006), p.161, no.63 and another by Simon Spero, The Klepser Collection (1984), p.28, no.14. The spontaneity of the decoration and rich famille verte palette combine with an English form to create what must have been a great novelty to 18th century eyes. Such cups were not sold with saucers and may have been intended as cabinet pieces. This reeded form is particularly rare.
