A Worcester coffee cup, circa 1752-53

Of deep U shape with a slightly everted rim, the double scrolled handle with a sharply pointed thumbrest, painted in kakiemon style with the 'Banded Hedge' pattern of two flowering branches issuing from three banded hedges, a phoenix-like bird in flight to one side, 6.4cm high

Footnotes

Provenance
Gwen and Ronald McKnight Melvin Collection, Simon Spero exhibition 2007, no.28
John Alchin Collection

This is a particularly early version of the 'Banded Hedge' pattern, lacking the overglaze blue included in pieces of slightly later date, see lots 46, 101 and 102 in this sale. Presumably, the blue proved difficult to fire. The fine potting and unusually crisp handle confirm the early date. For a similar example from the R David Butti Collection, see Bonhams sale, 10 May 2006, lot 16.
