A Worcester scallop shell pickle dish, circa 1753-54

Footnotes

Provenance
Simon Spero exhibition 2003, no.30
John Alchin Collection

These dishes were issued in four sizes. The Worcester factory's London warehouse listed them in their price card of about 1755-56 as 'Scallop'd Shells, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th', although this may refer only to blue and white examples. This must be the largest and no further coloured examples appear to be recorded. The presence of a painter's mark and an incised cross is also most unusual. For an example of one of the more usual smaller sizes from the Zorensky Collection, see Bonhams sale, 16 March 2004, lot 10.
