Footnotes

Provenance
Ralph Kenber Collection

Although moulding techniques were well advanced by this date, Worcester chose to create their baskets entirely by hand. Thrown on a potter's wheel, simple geometry and a compass were used to incise the design of intersecting circles on the exterior of the basket and each hole was cut out while the clay was still wet. The results were surprisingly even, for Worcester baskets are rarely misshapen.
