Provenance
With Jas. A. Lewis & Son, New York
Simon Spero Exhibition, 1993, no.26
Ralph Kenber Collection

The finely executed landscapes are redolent of the 'Romantic Rocks' and other patterns painted in underglaze blue, but the puce overglaze painting allows for much more intricate detail. A pair of similar mugs was purchased by Lady Charlotte Schreiber from Underhill, Worcester, for £6 in June 1881 and are in the Victoria & Albert Museum (414:576/A-1885). Another mug is illustrated by Simon Spero, The Klepser Collection (1984), colour pl. 27.
