A Worcester creamboat, circa 1756-58

Of high 'Chelsea Ewer' shape, spirally fluted and leaf moulded around the base, with a double scroll handle, brightly painted with the 'Chinese Musicians' pattern, four Chinese figures, with fans and a flute, including a young boy holding a 'ruyi' sceptre, a large butterfly hovering above, the leaf moulding highlighted in pink and green, a green diaper border inside the rim, 8.8cm high

Footnotes

Provenance
Ralph Kenber Collection

Worcester produced 'tall' and 'low' versions of this Chelsea shape, the high version being the much rarer of the two. These are occasionally decorated with chinoiserie scenes but the current lot is unusual in concentrating the pattern in the register above the moulded leaves. A similar creamboat from The Zorensky Collection, where the 'Mandarin' pattern obscures the leaf-moulding, was sold by Bonhams, 23 February 2005, lot 94.
