The Chinese Musicians Pattern

This is a direct copy of a Chinese famille rose pattern from the Yongzheng or early Qianlong period. In the H Rissik Marshall Collection in the Ashmolean Museum a Worcester sucrier is displayed alongside a Chinese saucer, showing how closely the Worcester painters imitated Chinese decoration. The pattern became a staple at Worcester during the late 1750s and early 1760s. A figure of a mother and child included in the pattern was the source for a printed design used on the onion bottle vases, lots 54-55 in this sale.
