A Worcester bough pot, circa 1768-70

Of bold rococo form, the high scrolled back pierced twice for suspension, the fixed top with a large opening surrounded by thirty-one smaller holes, the lobed sides moulded with three panels painted with colourful flower sprays, the scrollwork picked put in puce and gold, 22cm wide

Footnotes

Provenance
Ralph Kenber Collection

This represents a revival of a successful rococo form first made at Worcester a decade earlier. This shape is more commonly found with coloured grounds or underglaze blue flower prints. The intended usage of these pots is contested, but they seem to follow in the tradition of delft flower bricks, the various holes accommodating bulbs or cut flowers.
