A good Worcester mug, circa 1758-60

Bell-shaped with a grooved loop handle, painted with three animated 'fancy birds' atop rockwork issuing branches, a smaller bird diving above, the reverse with a large flower spray and two smaller sprays, 12cm high

This very individual and lively bird painting is rarely seen on Worcester porcelain. A similar mug is illustrated by H Rissik Marshall, Coloured Worcester Porcelain (1954) pl. 31, fig. 674. Another mug from the City of Birmingham Museum Collection is illustrated by Franklin Barrett, Worcester Porcelain and Lund's Bristol (1966) pl. 10c.
