Viscountess D'Abernon (1866-1954) was immortalised in a captivating portrait by John Singer Sargent during a visit to Venice in 1904, which the present lot takes inspiration from (Lady Helen Vincent, Viscountess d'Abernon, collection of Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabama). She was associated with the aristocratic intellectual group known as The Souls, and trained during World War I as a nurse anaesthetist.
