Beginning as early as 1908 and standing prominently in her oeuvre, Jane Peterson produced works that depicted the modern, 20th century woman traversing everyday life. For these works she often employed the use of subtle reflections, broad swaths of vibrant colors, a seated pose, and the use of props. She developed a true talent for endowing her female subjects with style and charm as seen in the present work. Peterson has depicted an unidentified woman in an interior holding an umbrella and adorned in fashionable contemporary dress. Seated next to her is a small dog resting. The woman's direct gaze, stern expression, and Peterson's use of vibrant shades of blue, purple and yellow throughout the painting command the viewer's attention.
