Barrymore, Memories: An autobiography, Haper & Brothers, New York, 1955, cover
Mortimer Offner was a student at the Clarence White School of Photography in New York. Fascinated by the stage, he later became a celebrity portraitist, finding patrons among contemporary stars of the Broadway stage, including Ethel Barrymore, pictured here.
In June 1930, Offner was sent to the west coast by Vanity Fair to make portraits of Hollywood stars. There, however, he turned his talents to screenwriting and enjoyed a successful career until blacklisted for his leftist political views.
