A Bernie Taupin Breakup Poem Written For Maxine

Autograph Manuscript Signed ("BJ Taupin") in red ink, 1 p, 8vo, Toronto, November 22, 1975, on Hyatt Regency Toronto stationery, framed.
Provenance: Collection of Maxine Taupin.

As their relationship faltered, Bernie penned this heartfelt poem for Maxine:

Is growing up enough, for anyone to judge
The actions that you hold
From those you wish to love.
Like seasons blown on bitter winds
These four walls, bar this man from sin,
And a distant heart on a puppets string
Wavers and plays on your milk white skin.

For you are the snow with its bitter blow
That slapped me in the face
And I was the clown with a pipers dream
That longed for a sweeter taste.

We've danced in the fire and gambled and lied
Laughed in the faces of fools
But who are we fooling
You could say where pulling
The curtain that ended the play.

Cause sparrow's sing and swallows fly
And the lemming runs and the young buck dies
I lay awake most nights and cry
Why. Because I love you.
