The sitter's family, by descent.

Charles Aiken (sometimes spelt Aikin) was born on 11th October 1827, the seventh child of James and Anna Aiken and was baptised at Oldham Street Presbyterian Church, Liverpool on 27th December. He sailed from Gravesend in the East India Company ship Nith on 3rd January 1847. He was allocated to the 9th Bengal Native Infantry for duty and initial training but tragically died later that year on 1st November 1847 before he was permanently attached to a regiment.
