An umimatsu (sea-pine) netsuke of a cicada

By Kanman (1793-1859), Iwami Province, early 19th century
The large insect breaking free of its pupa case, carved in high relief on a large leaf with another beneath, signed Iwami-no-kuni Kanman to (carved by Kanman in Iwami Province) with a kao. 7.1cm (2¾in).
