An ebony netsuke of a snake devouring a frog
By Mitani Goho, Aki Province, dated 1811
The large snake curled in several loops, clutching the huge frog in its open mouth, the scales of the former and the skin of the latter carved with delicate ukibori details, faintly signed with ukibori characters Bunka hachi kanoto-hitsuji juichigatsu hi Nihon koku Aki Goho (Goho of Aki Province in Japan on a day in the eleventh month of the eighth, kanoto-hitsuji, year of Bunka [1811]). 4.5cm (1¾in).
